5 Things to Remember When Renovating Your Bathroom or Kitchen

Renovating is an exciting time, but it can be a stressful time as well. By preparing everything out carefully before you start, you can make the job run a lot easier and in the end, it will come out even better than you pictured. Especially if you follow these 5 things to remember when renovating your bathroom or kitchen.

5 Things to Remember When Renovating Your Bathroom or Kitchen

When it comes to remodeling any part of your home. Especially the bathroom or kitchen. There are 5 things that you need to remember.

  1. Scheduling when remodeling
  2. Paint colors when renovating
  3. Knobs & handles for cabinets
  4. Selecting proper lighting
  5. How long can custom ordering take

Scheduling When Remodeling

Just like with any project, proper scheduling is the most important detail. Because if you don’t have every single detail properly scheduled the project can take a lot longer than expected.

When looking for a contractor to take charge of your renovation make sure that you work with their availability. Because they have other customers and can’t always come the day after you call. By thinking and planning ahead and calling several weeks in advance can save yourself a major headache because you were able to correctly schedule things with your contractor to start working.

If you have a plumber and an electrician coming in to do work. But they typically only have to come once or twice during the process. And they will most likely come at different stages. It is also important to remember that plumbers and electricians are subcontractors to the general contractors and that they run their own businesses. The general contractor will know what stage of the project you are in and will directly contact the plumber and electrician at the right times. Because if anything is running behind it can slow down your remodeling project and other trades like a domino effect.

And if you are planning on doing the renovation work by yourself. Make sure that you talk to your plumber and electrician to make sure that you know how often they have to come to work. It is greatly recommended that you add one to two days to your renovation calendar for them to come. Because you don’t know what issues might come up in the process. This way your project will still stay on time and won’t fall behind in any way. And don’t forget to look at your toilet when you are getting to remodel your bathroom.

Paint Colors When Renovating

Choosing the right paint color is an important detail for a more finished look for the room. What you put on the walls is what will pull together the colors that are in the rest of the space. Before you go to pick out a color, make sure that you have thought about how you want the room to look when it is finished.

When you are picking out the cabinets for your bathroom or kitchen you often pick out the flooring and backsplashes as well. I’d recommend that you pick out the paint color options at the same time as these items. By doing this you are making the decision even easier because you are selecting the countertop as well. And most countertop (granite or quartz) companies will have paint color combination options available for you to look at. So it will be super easy!

Knobs & Handles For Cabinets

Knobs and handles on doors and cabinetry are often something that is overlooked. But they are a crucial item for the finished look of the area that you are remodeling. By changing out the handles and knobs you will be amazed by how a small item like this can change up the look in your bathroom or kitchen. Make sure that you tie them in with the rest of the room to create the perfect touch.

When picking out the knobs and handles that you want to make sure that you get them early. Because having them on backorder or get lost and can delay the renovation project. They also need to match the size of your cabinets and drawers, because some drawers are designed to hold heavier items. So make sure that you plan accordingly. And you also want to make sure that the knobs and handles match with finish and style of the light fixtures as well. So it would work to pick out the lights first and then the knobs. Or do knobs first and then the lights. But whichever order you decide to purchase these items make sure that they coordinate. As long as you keep that in mind you will be happy with the finished look of the room. Because everything will flow together.

Selecting Proper Lighting

Having the right amount and spacing of light fixtures is important. Because if you don’t plan properly and get the correct fixtures, the space could end up with two different lights that you might not have wanted. When you go to pick out your light fixtures, I highly recommend that you go to a store that is dedicated to just lighting. They will have lighting design consultants on staff to answer any questions that you have. And if you bring pictures of the area that you are remodeling the staff can get a better idea of what you might be looking for. Supplying pieces from your cabinets, backsplash, flooring, countertop, and paint color is a great idea to supply as well. Also take pictures of the space in the morning, afternoon and evening. Because it gives them an even better idea of what the ambient, task and accent lighting of the space is.

Remember to order the lights early because they sometimes take a bit of time to come in. Just like with the knobs and handles for the cabinets. When they come in, make sure that you check them to make sure that the lights are in good shape and all of the parts are in the box. Make sure you ask the light consultant for the proper light bulbs to order as well.  It might sound silly but they will know what the right blubs to make your room light up properly for the ambient, task and accent lights to do ‘their job.’

How Long Can Custom Ordering Take

If you are custom ordering anything for your renovation project make sure that you take enough time to order in advance. It is crucial to do this because it takes anywhere from five days to 2-4 weeks to make the items. And there is a possibility that the company could be back-ordered. This can drastically delay your project and cause you unneeded stress and frustration. So make sure that you order all custom made items well in advance of your project’s starting date.

Lotz of Logic

While taking on a remodeling project by yourself isn’t difficult to do. It can sometimes be a hornets’ nest that you might not want to mess with. But it doesn’t hurt to take on what you know and leave the rest to the professionals. Though honestly, most contractors won’t want to come into a project once you have demoed it already and installed some items. So I greatly recommend that you think everything that needs to be done first. And then get multiple recommendations for two or more contractors and get bids. Make sure that you check references and go with your gut who whom you would like to have in your home and around your family for 3-8 weeks working on the project.

Because remodeling can be an exciting and stressful time make sure that you these 5 things to remember when renovating your bathroom or kitchen. And take your time checking everything and careful planning before you begin. Because that can really make the project flow much easier and in the end, it will be better than you imagined.

Don’t forget, if you need an estimate on these 5 things to remember when renovating your bathroom or kitchen, give me a call. My team and I would love to be of service to the Northwest Indiana communities such as St John, Long Beach, Beverly Shores, Lake of the Four Seasons, Schererville, Kreitzburg, Michigan City, Grand Beach, and New Buffalo, and all of the Chicago area for 30+ years.

How to Have a Nice Garage | Garage Improvement Ideas

Is your garage a lot like many others? With a lot of cluttered, many boxes and containers piled up, and you simply cannot locate anything? If that is the case then it is time to look at how to have a nice garage | garage improvement ideas.

How To Have A Nice Garage | Garage Improvement Ideas

Most garages are designed for the bare minimum and that includes being cold in the winter months and having barely any kind of light. Now is a good time to place your garage area on the list regarding house improvement. There are many different types of great solutions to improve your garage and enable it to be far more functional in your home. Some great ways to improve your garage are:

  • Remodeling The Walls
  • Adding Lighting in The Garage
  • The Garage Attic & Floor
  • Reusing Old Kitchen Cabinets
  • Garage Heaters

Remodeling The Walls

Many garages were built in the 1990s-2000s and were built with materials that were considered to be “just enough.” If you looked at the walls of your garage you would most likely find that they have basic drywall tape or the builder special of fire code tape. Although it is minimal, this look isn’t the nicest style and most people don’t like it. The garage is a great place to have the professionals come and redo the walls for you and your family. A professional drywaller will be able to finish off the walls smoothly and seamlessly. Once the walls are done it is a good idea to have it painted and cheap trim work added around the baseboard area. The trim work will help to keep out the bugs, mice, and ants that are looking to create homes.

Adding Lighting In The Garage

Many garages come with the one to two basic “Builder special” ceramic light fixtures. Since they barely give any light to look for anything, it is important to have proper lighting. LED lights or solar tube lights work great in a space like this since they give off plenty of light for you to see with. While they will be more expensive it will be worth it to have them installed. Especially since they last forever and will be cost-effective in the long run with the energy that they will save.

The Garage Attic & Floor

When it comes to the attic over your garage it is important to make it accessible as well as comfortable to work and store things in. Since attics are another place that has the “builder special” for light fixtures this is another great place to add more lighting too. Because the wiring is already there it is very easy to change out the light fixtures. Another investment to add to your attic is good stairs, especially since most attics come with flimsy pull-down ones. Replacing the flimsy stairs with heavy-rated ones that can hold up to 300 pounds (when carrying items). This is so that you can safely bring any large items up and down from the attic.

The garage floor is another space that is often overlooked when doing home improvements. A simple fix to brighten up your garage floors is DIY-ing with a simple water-based epoxy or polyurethane. But the best results come when you hire a professional to do the floors. While it is easy and cheaper to run to the store and buy the products yourself, the professionals will have better products and materials to do it with.

Reusing Old Kitchen Cabinets

When redoing their kitchen people sometimes forget that they can reuse their old kitchen cabinets in other parts of the house. The garage is one of those places. Especially since it saves you money and adds storage space to your garage. Because of how easy and simple it is to place the old cabinets in the garage, this stage will feel the most complete and satisfying because they are free. Even if you aren’t planning on remodeling your kitchen anytime soon you have plenty of neighbors that may be remodeling their kitchen and getting rid of old cabinets. Placing them in your garage is a great way to reuse them and give them a new life.

Garage Heaters

Depending on what part of the country you live in a heater is a great component to have. With a heater, it is better to hire a professional to install a good commercial grade heater. It is something that you won’t regret if you are in your garage watching the game. Because you won’t have to worry about freezing before seeing who wins. A heater also allows you to spend time in the garage with family and friends without worrying about the temperature.

Lotz of Logic

Because the garage is part of your home it is recommended that it be placed on your home improvement list. Especially when it comes to heating and lighting. By updating your garage with new lights, adding a heater and installing cabinets for storage gives the space a new life. The floor coating and painting the walls give your garage a finished look which is great if you are hosting a party outside and need a place to set up food and drink as well as space to eat. By following these simple steps on how to have a nice garage | garage improvement ideas you can create a great space to hang out.

How To Choose Roof Shingle Colors

Many people don’t ever look at the color of the roof of their home. People often focus on house siding, wooden posts, trim, gutters, and downspouts. Today we are talking about how to choose roof shingle colors for your home.

How To Choose Roof Shingle Colors

When it comes to your home you want it to look great. Whether it is simply by updating the porch or adding in great curb appeal. However, the roof is often overlooked during these updates. Since the roof is anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 the total of what is seen on many residences picking the right roof shingle color is important. It is important to take the color of the roof shingles into consideration when updating the rest of your home. Having good stability between all of the colors will bring all of your curb appeal together.

The Importance Of Color

Colors and how they work is something that we all learned in school. Especially how light and dark colors work with heat. This is important to remember when working with roof shingles. Since light colors will keep the house cooler while darker colors will keep the house warmer. It is very similar to what clothing people wear on hot summer days. Where dark colors keep us warmer and light colors keep us cooler. On a house, dark-colored shingles will keep the heating bill higher and light colors keep it cooler and save you money on heating and cooling.

While black, dark grey, dark brown and dark green are the common colors seen on houses, there are lighter options for shingles. Besides the traditional white and light brown colors, light-colored shingles also come in tan or reddish-orange colors. These colors work great if you are wanting to install a “cool roof” on your home. If your home isn’t ready for new shingles, which should be done every twenty years or so, then adding large trees to your yard will help provide shade if your roof has darker colored shingles. The same goes for when you are planning on staining or painting the siding of your home.

Coordinating Roof Colors With The House

As homeowners, we often forget to look at the roofs of our own homes. By looking at our neighbors’ houses and then our own we can see that the roof might not always match the rest of the house. This is why it is important to take your roof into consideration when designing the rest of your house. Especially since the roof is 1/3 of what is seen of the house. Make sure that you use that to your advantage when selecting the color of your shingles.

If your home has red brick as part of the exterior then selecting a shingle that matches it will make your home look classy and ageless. Neutral colors are a safe option to work with while still staying stylish. While you may not pay attention to the shingles it is still important to let them influence the rest of your curb appeal. Especially since friends and visitors may notice your roof before you do. By having a nice roof that compliments your home then your curb appeal is closer to being amazing.

Lotz of Logic

When selecting a color for your roof try to pick a color that represents your personality while still relating to others and will stay in style. This will make it easier in the event of needing to move for a job transfer, downsizing or when you are ready for a new season. No one wants to stay in a home simply because their style is unique to them. Go for a look that adds value to your home. As a last reminder check with your homeowners’ association, if you have one, to find out what colors you are allowed to pick before purchasing new shingles.

Don’t forget, if you need an estimate on roof shingles, give me a call. My team and I have been serving Plainfield, Naperville, Lisle, Shorewood, Joliet, Oswego, Yorkville, and all of the Chicago area for 30+ years.
